Triangle Gives Back Initiative to Launch at Sold Out Event

Multi-year effort is the first of its kind in the Triangle

Durham, N.C. (November 12, 2008) – Triangle Gives Back: A National Philanthropy Day Celebration is a breakfast event to launch the Triangle Gives Back initiative and honor diverse philanthropists from our region. The event, which quickly sold out 4oo tickets, will be held Thursday, November 13, 2008 from 7:30- 9:30 am in Bay 7 of the American Tobacco Campus in Durham.

How the Triangle Gives Back: A Report to the Region will be unveiled at the event. The research report represents the most comprehensive data collection effort to date on life in the Triangle.

The report is the kick-off of a larger initiative known as Triangle Gives Back, a strategic alliance of community leaders working to improve our region. The multi-year effort is intended to generate further research and analysis as well as increased community involvement.

“The Triangle often ranks as one of the best places to live, work, and play,” noted Andrea Bazán, Triangle Community Foundation president, “but how do we rank in terms of giving back?   Are we meeting the real needs of our community?  This will be an increasingly important question as the shockwaves of the economic fallout continue to hit the community.”

Bazan explained that the goal of Triangle Gives Back is to demystify philanthropy—which is essentially the giving of time, talent and treasure — and increase participation in philanthropy in all its forms.

Commissioned by Triangle Community Foundation and North Carolina Public Radio®-WUNC to research patterns of giving in the Triangle, the report was led by Ferrell Guillory and Andrew Holton of the UNC Program on Public Life.

The report is embargoed until November 13th and will then be housed on www.trianglegivesback.org. Research will continue to be added to the site as new data is received.

The site, designed by Capstrat, will utilize state-of-the-art technologies to create an online hub to connect all the spokes of philanthropy in the Triangle.  Dan Moore, Capstrat vice president and account director, describes the site as “Match.com meets Facebook for philanthropy.” The online community will go live in January 2009 but sign-up is available now on the site.

Triangle Community Foundation, North Carolina Public Radio®-WUNC, and the Association of Fundraising Professionals-Triangle Chapter are hosting the community event which will be moderated by Frank Stasio.  The morning will culminate in an awards ceremony presented by the Association of Fundraising Professionals-Triangle Chapter to honor philanthropists who have made outstanding contributions to the community.

Sponsored annually by the Association of Fundraising Professionals, National Philanthropy Day recognizes and awards philanthropists who enhance the quality of life in the Triangle through their acts of generosity. In the Triangle, National Philanthropy Day is sponsored by Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina Foundation, NC Gives, and Women's Edge.
