Smart Giving Instead of Big Giving
Katherine Gustafson contends there ought to be a new definition for the word "best" when thinking about the best philanthropists and Barron's list of the world's best philanthropists does just that. Instead of those that give the most money, this list defines the best as philanthropy that has the biggest impact; gets the biggest bank-for-the-buck. Pierre & Pam Omidyar, the founder of Ebay and his wife, are deemed as the "best" philanthropists since they invest in organizations that aim for high-impact social change. The Omidyars say, "philanthropy isn't a function of the size of your wallet" and argues that often the poorest among us are the most philanthropic.

The Chronicle Philanthropy highlights recent research that finds, despite the current economic climate, corporations continue to place giving in their community as a top priority. Although charitable contributions decreased, corporations found ways to give in new and different ways!

N.C. State grad, Doc Hendley, is nominated for the CNN Hero of the Year for his innovative nonprofit organization that started with a tip jar. Wine to Water mission is to provide clean water to needy people around the world and has successfully profided functioning drink wells for 25,000 people in Third World Countries.
