Report: Triangle Giving is Down

New data shows charitable giving in the Triangle is lower than much of the state.
According to IRS data, the average person in the Triangle gives about 3.7 percent of their income to charities. That is lower than the state wide average of charitable giving, which is about 4.4 percent.
The Triangle is a full percentage point lower than Triad-area giving. Their average giving per person is about 4.7 percent.
Leaders of the Triangle Community Foundation say a disconnect between local communities is a reason for the drop off in giving. So, the organization has developed a social networking Web site, similar to Facebook and Match.com to pair donors with charities.
"We're really trying to create a community. A community of people that care about where they live, and want to do something about it," said foundation president Andrea Bazan.
Businesses and individuals can create profiles on the new Web site, and find out which area charities match their interests.
