New Stimulus Opportunity for Nonprofits Providing Job Training

The U.S. Department of Labor has announced that $220 million in stimulus funds will be awarded to public entities and private nonprofit organizations to provide training for careers in health care and other high-growth industries.  The department expects to award 45 to 65 grants, ranging from $2 million to $5 million.  Applications for funding are due October 5, 2009.  Read on for more information, and read the full announcement here to learn specifics and to see whether your organization qualifies.

The grants will pay for a wide range of individuals to receive training in the high-growth health care fields of nursing, allied health, long-term care, and health information technology.

Grants will also be available to pay for training in specific, regional high-growth industries.  Examples include information technology, advanced manufacturing, wireless and broadband deployment, transportation and warehousing, and biotechnology.  The industries must be projected to add substantial numbers of new jobs to the economy and must be driven by technology and innovation requireing new skill sets for workers.

Applicants are encouraged to align their proposals with other stimulus fund projects aimed at creating jobs and promoting economic growth.  Information on state projects that are funded by stimulus money and that could provide partnership opportunities can be found here.  Information on federal projects can be found here.

Cost sharing or matching funds are not required.  But leveraged resources are strongly encouraged and might strengthen an application.

The Department of Labor will hold a Webinar at 3 p.m. on August 12 to share information about the grant and the application process.  The Webinar will be held here, and it will remain posted afterward.
