State Budget Holds Some Opportunities for Nonprofits

Governor Perdue signed the state budget into law on August 7, 2009.  Included are a couple of upcoming competitive grant opportunities for nonprofits:

  • Dropout Prevention: Nonprofits can apply for grants of up to $175,000 to fund innovative programs and initiatives that target students at risk of dropping out of school. More criteria can be found in the state budget, starting at the bottom of page 30. For a list of 2008 grant winners, follow this link. The application will be posted on September 1, 2009, to the Deparment of Public Instruction website.
  • Community Health: More than $13.7 million will be distributed as competitive grants over the next two fiscal years to rural health centers, free clinics, public health departments, school-based health centers, qualified health centers and other nonprofit organizations that provide primary care and preventive health services to uninsured and indigent persons. Details are forthcoming, but the NC Department of Health and Human Services Office of Rural Health expects an application to be posted in September.
