Genesis Home - Adopt a Family for the Holidays
Help us make a family’s holiday brighter, be an Adopt-A-Family sponsor!
Each year during the holiday season, Genesis Home staff coordinates the Adopt-A Family program. The Adopt-A-Family program allows interested community residents, businesses, and groups to purchase new Christmas gifts for homeless families staying at Genesis Home. There are sixteen families with children residing at Genesis Home at any given time. Families range from a single parent with one child, to families of six, including the parents. Often when these families arrive to our program they come bearing very little. Our Adopt-A-Family program partners with individuals and groups to help them have an enjoyable, memorable Christmas.
You can help us by sponsoring a family as an individual, as a group, or by making a donation to the program. All sponsors are provided with information on the family they are adopting, such as their ages, gender, clothing size, and gift suggestions.
The Adopt-A-Family program runs from November 11, 2010 – December 10, 2010. To adopt a family, simply call 919-683-5878 ext. 28 or send an email to volunteer@genesishome.org, and we will gladly match you with a family in need.

North Carolinians Against Gun Violence - "Peace Toys for War Toys" Exchange
Give the gift of peace to a local child. Just like you, NCGV has been shocked at the brutal bullying of children that has recently come to light across the nation. As adults, we have a responsibility to create a safe and peaceful environment for all children. In this role, we must take a stand against the trend of bullying and aggression sweeping our country. We must teach our children that violence is never the answer.
How do we build this safer community? One way is by promoting toys that model cooperation. Toys are critical in a child's development, helping them know how to handle trauma and conflict in ways that are socially acceptable. Toys enable children to learn about the world and give them a means of self-expression.
You can help by collecting toys for our annual "Peace Toys for War Toys Exchange." Children will be invited to exchange their “war toys” for brand-new “peace toys.” War toys are any type of violent toy, from killer robots and toy guns to violent video games. Peace toys are those that encourage cooperation and creative, nonviolent activities. Some examples of "peace toys" include: art supplies, board games, sports equipment, blocks, dolls, books, jump ropes, puzzles, etc. If you would like to donate toys, or for more information, visit our Toy Exchange Page.
The Durham Peace Toys for War Toys Exchange—sponsored by North Carolinians Against Gun Violence (NCGV), Calvary Ministries of the Westend Community, and Durham Project Safe Neighborhoods—underscores that violence is not child’s play, and that our community is committed to instilling the values of peace and justice in our children. The event also serves as a community reminder of the staggering number of persons who have lost their lives to gun violence. Toys should be new and unwrapped. To arrange for drop off or pick up of toys by Dec. 7th, contact our office at 919/403-7665, or email gneely@ncgv.org. All donations are tax deductible
