A Few Steps for Man Means Assistance for the Animals at the Durham County Animal Shelter,
Animal Protection Society of Durham Celebrates Ten Years of the Walk for the Animals

Durham, April 9, 2010- The Animal Protection Society of Durham (APS) will hold its 10th annual Walk for the Animals on Saturday, May 22, 2010 from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. The event will take place at Duke University’s East Campus. This 1.5 mile walk raises money and awareness for homeless and abandoned animals in Durham County and APS hopes to raise $100,000 and attract 1,000 walkers.
For ten years the Animal Protection Society of Durham has hosted this family event that not only raises much need funds to support the Durham County Animal Shelter, but brings the community together to promote responsible ownership the adoption of shelter animals. “Since its conception, thousands of individuals have literally stepped forward to make a difference in the lives of the animals that APS serves. Since 2001, more than $650,000 has been raised to assist the animals on our care,” stated Development Director and event organizer Rebecca Hankins.

One-hundred percent of the proceeds benefit the APS of Durham, which cares for thousands animals at the Durham County Animal Shelter that have been abandoned, lost, or abused. Each year, nearly 7,000 dogs, puppies, cats, kittens, ferrets, guinea pigs, and other pocket pets come to the shelter. Due to the challenging economic climate, the County has also scaled back its financial support of the shelter, causing APS to rely more heavily on private support. “It costs more than $800,000 to care for all of the animals that come into the shelter,” said Rebecca Hankins. “The Walk for the Animals is a fun and exciting way to help raise money and bring the community together in support or an important cause.”

APS of Durham is calling all animal lovers, with or without a pet, to participate in a 1.5 mile walk around Duke University’s East Campus. Festivities also include a free breakfast for walk participants, contests, pet-related demonstrations, adoptable pets, and wonderful entertainment for children of all ages.

This year’s Walk is presented by the Herald-Sun. Other premier sponsors include Duke University, WUNC, 100.7 the River, NBC 17, and Camp Bow Wow-Durham.
