Mentoring is Giving Back

January 11, 2012

Sometimes things fall into place just as they’re supposed to. Two years ago, Devin’s grandmother sought a solution to her grandson’s needing a male role model and friend. When she asked his guidance counselor if there were a “big buddy” program in Chatham County, he connected her to Chatham County Together! Not too far away was a young father, husband and newcomer who searched the Internet for a volunteer mentoring opportunity. As he looked back upon his childhood, he recognized the tremendous influence someone had upon his life, and it was time to “give back.” He found CCT!, and the match was made – a special one, at that.
“It was God-sent!” Devin’s grandmother recalled enthusiastically. Staff member Shirille Lee and volunteer Steven Klotz came by the house. “It was a nice meeting,” she said.

“Devin was sad after losing his father and friend. He was not himself and was not getting along with other kids. He loves science, and his grades fell.

“When Steven comes, he greets him warmly and asks, ‘Hey, buddy, what would you like to do today?’ I have trouble with my legs, so I can’t be involved in physical games. They talk and get their exercise together, like shooting baskets. He helps answer questions, and goes to games.

“He helps me, too! He has shown me how to be more neutral, guiding me through situations that I need to resolve at school or wherever. My natural response is to be loud. I am now more open-minded when discussing things.

“Whenever Devin is disobedient or has trouble in school, Steven talks to him about acceptable behavior – man to young man. We’re a perfect match! Everyone’s not so lucky,” she said.
