Expansion of the new CVNC.org website

February 12, 2011

We are pleased to report that our new CVNC.org website debuted in January, 2011. We hope you will take a look at the new website and give us feedback. This redesign of our online arts journal allows us to manage our arts data more efficiently, moving from thousands of basic html pages to multiple, interconnected databases. Our budget (along with the generosity of our website designer) allowed us to establish the framework of databases that will drive our expansion of services in the future. While the new website provides greatly improved search and display functions, there is still much to be done to meet the needs of arts lovers throughout North Carolina. CVNC is requesting up to $5,000.00 that will allow us to begin the work needed to add these features.

CVNC expects its relationship with its website designer to be a long-term one. We contracted with Online Publication, Inc., the provider of the Newspapers in Education (NIE) website, because of their long history in journalism and work in providing online news. As this partnership grows, we will identify more features that we can provide arts enthusiasts across our state. We mention here three features that, with support from your foundation, we hope to add.

Addition of email newsletter targeted to specific disciplines and/or regions

Since our initial planning for the new website, readers have expressed their desires to receive an email newsletter tailored to their interests. This free newsletter will allow them to receive information about events in their preferred disciplines plus links to recently posted reviews. While the primary reason for adding this feature is to be responsive to our readers, this will also allow us to engage our readers more fully and identify their interests.

Mobile Application

We now live in the world of smart phones and other mobile devices. Our new website is designed primarily to display on a computer screen. We recognize that many of our readers wish to find information about events while they are out. They may need to double check the starting time of a performance or find directions and a map to the venue. CVNC wishes to displays that are tailored to the size of the screens of these devices, both iPhones and Android-based ones.

Increase in staff hours to add more visuals to website

While journalism deals primarily with words, we recognize that our readers also want to see graphical information about the artists and organizations that interest them. With our new website, we can now more easily add pictures to our event listings and articles. Your support of our request will help fund the artistic and technical hours that are needed to add these visuals.
