MISSION STATEMENT

Through athletic training and competition, the Durham Striders program seeks to strengthen youth in the basics of citizenship by developing character, confidence, moral/ethical values, and positive self-images.

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES

The Durham Striders primary objectives are to:

  • Expand opportunities for youth to benefit from sports-skills instruction by engaging in sports training and competition;
  • Educate youth in physical fitness, nutrition; and overall mental and physical wellness;
  • Expose and counsel youth on career and vocational development and educational opportunities;
  • Educate youth in soft skills, develop professional mentorships and provide other employment preparation training;
  • Provide counseling in areas of drug awareness, teen sexuality, child self-protection skills and ethnic diversity;
  • Teach youth lessons in discipline, leadership, sportsmanship, responsibility, independence and respect;
  • Help build character, thereby better preparing youth to become better citizens; and,
  • Provide the Striders’ services to youth worldwide.

SIGNIFICANCE

Durham Striders Track Club, Inc. is a Durham based community youth track and field program that provides training for children between the ages of 6 to 18 years. Since 1975, the Striders program has served youth of all races and backgrounds from Durham and the surrounding communities providing them with the opportunity to learn the self-discipline required to develop their own natural physical and mental talents. Youth benefit from the years of dedicated coaching and training from individuals educated and experienced in all areas. Beginning with only the three founders and 30 children, the program has grown to a membership of over 300 children per summer, a staff of approximately 30, and boasts of an alumni of over 200 college graduates (most received athletic and/or academic scholarships).

PRODUCTS OF THE DURHAM STRIDERS TRACK CLUB, INC.

The Durham Striders helped build the foundation for fourteen professional athletes, an USA Olympic gold medallist, a world record holder, an USA Winter Olympic’s silver medallist., seven college and high school athletic coaches, hosts of college outstanding athletes and students, business persons, engineers, architects, doctors, attorneys, law enforcement professionals, entrepreneurs, university/college administrators, and community leaders, etc. As you can tell, the Striders alumni excel in all walks of life.
