HABITAT OF DURHAM DEDICATES NEW HOME MAY 2

Durham, NC - At 12 noon on Saturday, May 2, Habitat for Humanity of Durham will dedicate a new home for the Ham family. The home, at 4 Founders Circle, is made possible with support from the 2009 Women Build project.

Women Build is a Habitat for Humanity International program that trains women to make a difference by building homes and communities. Thousands of houses have been built by women crews around the world - at the end of 2008, more than 1,400 homes since Women Build’s official creation in 1998.

Women Build brings together women from all walks of life to address, in a concrete way, the housing crisis facing millions of women and children across the globe. Decent, affordable housing is not a feminist issue; it is a quality of life issue facing families everywhere. Habitat is training women to become effective volunteers, better equipped to fight poverty housing.

The home is located in Hope Crossing, a 31-home neighborhood in East Durham which is the first affordable green community in N.C. Homes in Hope Crossing feature energy-efficient and eco-friendly construction. The green community plan features a perimeter walking trail and community garden, as well as a playground and picnic area.

Habitat for Humanity of Durham transforms lives and communities by making homeownership possible in partnership with people who care. Habitat has broken ground on more than 200 homes in Durham since 1985. Families are selected based on housing need, ability to repay the loan in full and willingness to partner with Habitat. The 1700 U.S. Habitat affiliates believe decent housing is a matter of conscience and action. Habitat for Humanity International works in 100 countries and since 1976 has provided more than 1.5 million people with safe, decent, affordable homes.
