JLDOC and the Durham Performance Learning Center help more students graduate high school

February 13, 2009

The Junior League of Durham and Orange Counties is committed to helping children develop to their fullest potential. To that end, we've forged an exciting partnership with the Durham Performance Learning Center (DPLC) for the 2008-2009 League year.

The DPLC is an alternative high school run by the Durham Public Schools for students who wish to acquire their high school diploma outside of the traditional high school system. It offers students the opportunity for online learning with internships and job shadowing in a unique setting. The DPLC opened in August 2007 in the basement of Northgate Mall and features small classes where students work online at their own pace. Some 110-120 students are presently enrolled.

Through the partnership, League members are volunteering their time as mentors and tutors, offering internships to DPLC students, and building a school library.

DPLC needs additional volunteers. If you would like to serve as a mentor or offer an internship, contact Maya Rosman, Services Coordinator, at maya.rosman@cisdurham.org. Due to the regular student contact these tutoring placements require, it will be necessary for you to complete a background check through the Durham County Public School System.
