Communities in Schools Highlights Partnership with JLDOC

In its December 2008 Newsletter, Communities in Schools discusses the partnership the JLDOC has formed with the Durham Performance Learning Center (DPLC). Through the partnership, League members are serving as mentors to the students, offering internships at local organizations, and have collected several hundred books to start a library for the school.

The DPLC is an alternative high school run by the Durham Public Schools for students who wish to acquire their high school diploma outside of the traditional high school system. It offers students the opportunity for online learning with internships and job shadowing in a unique setting. The DPLC opened in August 2007 in the basement of Northgate Mall and features small classes where students work online at their own pace. Some 110-120 students are presently enrolled.
