About MDC

MDC’s mission is to help organizations and communities close the gaps that separate people from opportunity. We have been working to create positive change in disadvantaged communities for 40 years by conducting research and demonstrating effective programs at the community level.

We also publish a biennial report, The State of the South, which explores the region from pivotal perspectives that reflect our vision for a region that is both equitable and competitive, one that is strong, resourceful and works well for all its residents.

We focus on three areas:

• Education
• Economic and workforce development
• Asset building

We are a private, nonprofit organization located in Chapel Hill, N.C., and are supported by grants and contracts from foundations; federal, state, and local governments; and the private sector.

MDC works through multiple strategies:

• Data-based publications and media outreach to communicate the need for change and inform public dialogue
• Demonstration projects to test ideas in economic development, workforce development, and education
• Training and development to strengthen leadership and civic capacity to address inequity
• Consulting to philanthropy in strategic use of assets
