More than 1.3 million North Carolinians live in poverty. Let's change that together.

The North Carolina Justice Center works to reduce poverty in North Carolina by helping to ensure that every household has access to the resources, services and fair treatment needed to enjoy economic security.

The Justice Center pursues its ambitious mission through five main strategies:

1. Litigation - Justice Center lawyers take on carefully selected, high-impact cases that are designed to protect and expand the rights of low-income groups and individuals;
2. Research and Analysis - Justice Center experts research and analyze public policies affecting low-income North Carolinians, identify strategies for improvement and publish their findings in an array of reports, newsletters and issue briefs;
3. Public Policy Advocacy - Justice Center advocates speak out on behalf of vulnerable North Carolinians and work to win concrete policy changes from elected officials and administrative agencies;
4. Grassroots Action - Justice Center activists build relationships with groups and individuals at the grassroots level and pursue a two-way process of education and empowerment;
5. Communications - The Justice Center generates commentaries and reports that shape public opinion, and staff frequently appear in the media and as public speakers, panelists and debate participants.

The Justice Center is home to a number of well-known specialized projects, including:

NC Budget and Tax Center - the state's leading voice for progressive fiscal policies

NC Health Access Coalition - a group of community leaders and organizations who advocate for affordable, accessible and high-quality healthcare

Immigrants Legal Assistance Project - attorneys and paralegals providing direct legal assistance to low-income immigrants and migrant workers.

NC Policy Watch - the state's leading source of regular news and commentary on statewide policies.

Education & Law Project - an outreach and advocacy project working to improve the public education system in North Carolina so it better serves low-income and minority children.

Housing and Consumer Issues - ensuring all North Carolinians have access to safe, affordable housing and protection from abusive business practices.
