Nourish International
Nourish International invites college students around the country to be a part of the solution to global poverty, providing them with the training, support and creative space they need to make a difference. Nourish students run small businesses and invest their earnings in sustainable development projects abroad. Over the summer, Nourish students travel to assist community partners in the implementation of these projects.
Nourish makes an impact in two ways. First is through our projects, where we invest in long-term, community-based solutions to poverty. Second is through our students, whom we equip with the entrepreneurship, leadership, and cross-cultural skills they need to become lifelong agents of social change.
Located in Chapel Hill, the staff at the Nourish International National Office provide students with the support, training and oversight they need to run successful business ventures and summer projects. The National Office also provides the initial funding for new student chapters at universities across the nation.
The National Office relies on an earned income model. Student chapters give back a percentage of what they earn to the National Office, providing for future chapter expansion and ensuring the organization's sustainability. In the future, Nourish hopes to rely on this model to cover 100% of its overhead costs.
Nourish International was founded in 2003 by Sindhura Citineni as the UNC student group "Hunger Lunch." Since incorporating as a 501(c)3 nonprofit in 2006, Nourish has grown into a national organization, engaging hundreds of students at 24 universities across the United States.
In 2008, Nourish received the North Carolina Peace Prize for excellence in cross-cultural solutions and sustainable development. Since 2003, Nourish has sent $212,280 and 281 students abroad, working with community partners on 45 projects around the world.
