Grant will fund energy-efficient theater lighting
February 11, 2010
February 11, 2010The new lights will illuminate PlayMakers Repertory Company and student productions in the Paul Green and Elizabeth Price Kenan theaters, located in the Center for Dramatic Art on Country Club Road.
More than 200 new lighting instruments will make their debut in PlayMakers’ “The Importance of Being Earnest” by Oscar Wilde, March 3-21 in the Paul Green Theatre.
PlayMakers, the professional theater in residence at UNC, and the dramatic art department, both in the College of Arts and Sciences, were recipients of the grant from the Renewable Energy Special Projects Committee.
The UNC student committee works to increase use of renewable energy and sustainable practices by funding renewable energy, energy efficiency, maintenance and energy education projects on campus. Grant money comes from a $4-per-semester fee paid by students.
“Lights are teaching tools in the department of dramatic art,” said Jeffrey Cornell, associate department chair. “Through this grant, students are learning best practices of sustainability and energy efficiency in the theatrical profession.”
Joseph Haj, producing artistic director of PlayMakers, said, “This grant allows PlayMakers to better serve its artists and its audience with more up-to-date equipment while also reducing our impact on the environment. It’s an all-around win-win.”
