SAFE Haven Rescues 17 Cats from Eastern North Carolina Hoarder

January 26, 2012

Early on the morning of the January 19, SAFE Haven’s staff traveled and rescued 17 cats from a hoarding situation in eastern North Carolina. The majority of the cats were housed in an outside pen sharing their “home” and food with each other and wildlife. When staff arrived with temperatures in the low 30s, the cats were huddled together on a cold wet blanket doing all they could to stay warm.

Our rescue of these cats is only the beginning as they all will need considerable medical care and attention in the coming weeks. “That’s the beauty and the power of a No Kill shelter,” said Pamela Miller, Founder and Executive Director of SAFE Haven. “We have the ability to provide the love, attention and most importantly the time each individual cat needs to feel safe again.”

Hoarding is an issue that SAFE Haven’s Operation SAFE has tackled for many years. Each year in the United States, nearly 250,000 animals are victims of animal hoarding according to the Humane Society of the United States.

Circumstances differ among the cases but animals usually suffer from neglect, improper veterinary care and poor sanitary conditions. In some cases like this one, animals are living in surroundings covered in animal feces, urine and even decaying animal carcasses.

Regardless of these circumstances, the Resilient Seventeen are survivors but they need your help. For only $17, you can help these cats have a second chance.

All donations are tax deductible.

Within 24 hours, we have already seen a difference in their demeanor and their sincere will to live. Many of them are at least eight years old with extreme dental disease, which will require extensive medical attention to relieve them from constant pain. However, they are warm, happy, and fed. They are constantly seeking attention and extremely inviting. We are so anxious for them to truly start their recovery and hopefully find wonderful forever homes.
