SWOOP (Strong Women Organizing Outrageous Projects)
To provide community service through short-term labor and support to meet otherwise insurmountable community needs in a spirit of cooperative sisterhood.
SWOOP offers two programs throughout the Triangle area to support our mission and purposes: SWOOPin' Saturday and Ramp It Up!
The SWOOPin' Saturday program continues our tradition, born from hurricane clean-up efforts in 1996, of gathering together on a Saturday to pool our efforts and complete an overwhelming project. These projects benefit individuals (and agencies that serve them) facing challenges of poverty, homelessness, disability, or age.
Ramp It Up! is a new program (January 2011) through which we provide wheelchair ramps for people who cannot afford to pay for them. To date, we have completed ramps for individuals with multiple sclerosis, stroke, and age-related physical limitations, and we have received additional requests from individuals with diabetes, peripheral arterial disease, and developmental disabilities.
Through both programs, SWOOP provides an easy way for women to give back to the community as well as the opportunity to learn new skills, make new friends, and take on leadership positions.
