By: Triangle non-profit launches statewide program
Now North Carolina’s EBT cardholders from ‘mountains-to-the-sea’ may purchase fresh fruits and vegetables at N.C. 21st Century Farmers’ Markets. LEAFLIGHT of Chapel Hill operates and directs the NC 21st Century Farmers’ Markets program, enabling cash-less consumers an ability to purchase healthy, locally-grown NC food and farm products with convenient payment options. NC’s 21st Century Farmers’ Markets program provides NC Food and Nutrition Services recipients, and debit and credit card consumers access to farmers’ markets, tailgate markets, mini mobile-markets, community supported agriculture, and Certified Roadside Farm Stands enrolled in the USDA, Food and Nutrition Service, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
Eleven 21st Century Farmers’ Markets locations will be open in 2010: Asheville City Market, Columbus County Community Farmers’ Market, Davidson Farmers’ Market, Lincoln County Farmers’ Market in downtown Lincolnton, Madison County Farmers’ & Artisans’ Market, Onslow County Farmers’ Market, Riverfront Farmers’ Market, Rockingham County Farmers’ Market, Salisbury-Rowan County Farmers’ Market, Watauga County Farmers’ Market, Yancey County Farmers’ Market. Additional locations will be announced this spring.
