Community Portrait of Durham open studio

September 14, 2010 12:00 AM - 12:00 AM

Location: The Scrap Exchange

Community Portrait of Durham project update and Open Studio at the Scrap Exchange starting at 7:00pm. Come and make your own piece for the project. What does Durham mean to you?

Everyone can participate in a community art project that is one of the main visual arts events this fall. A group made up of artists and residents began meeting in July to work out plans for a community portrait of Durham to be constructed this fall.

Organizers have set a date of Oct. 3, from 12-4, at Durham Central Park. Chris Chinchar, a local photographer and architect, got inspiration for the project from filmmaker Lucy Walker's documentary "Waste Land," which chronicles the work of an artist who works with recyclers who re-use goods from a landfill in Brazil.

Once the community project is created, a permanent photograph of it will be taken. The Durham Arts Council has agreed to include that photograph in an exhibit of portraits scheduled to open this fall, "People You May Know: Contemporary Portraits," will be on view Oct. 8-Jan. 9, 2011, in the Allenton and Semans galleries at the Arts Council, 120 Morris St.The public can meet the artists at a free reception Oct. 15 from 5 to 7 p.m. This exhibit also will include a photograph of the community portrait of Durham planned for October.
