DURHAM -- What do 137 non-profit agencies, 728 registered runners, 150-plus volunteers, 100 dozen Krispy Kreme donuts, a tour of Durham and more than $250,000 have in common? The 2011 Great Human Race.

On March 26, The Volunteer Center of Durham hosted the 16th annual Great Human Race (GHR) a 5K race and community walk benefiting area nonprofit organizations at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.

The event that supports more than 100 nonprofit agencies and shows off the beauty of Durham.

Runner Brigid King noted, "This year I ran with the Triangle Society for Human Resource Management, raising money for the Society for Human Resource Management. I missed the downtown scene of the old course but LOVED going through Forest Hills. It is a beautiful area of Durham that I had not visited before and it directly connects to American Tobacco Trail."

"We work year round to make this race a success but it is the spirit of the nonprofit agencies and all their hard work raising money that make the GHR great," said GHR director Tammy Dorfman.

When all the money is counted the GHR and the area nonprofit agencies will have raised more than $250,000. Top fundraising agencies so far are (totals subject to change due to money still coming in and corporate sponsorships):

  • Coalition to Unchain Dogs $33,274
  • Augustine Project $15,100
  • NC Therapeutic Riding Center $14,661
  • Lucy Daniels Center $9,634
  • Genesis Home $9,703
  • Durham Literacy Center $8,895
  • Carolina Tiger Rescue $8,632
  • Manbites Dog Theater -- $8,354

Reginald Hodges, Executive Director of the Durham Literacy Center, said "Without the Great Human Race and our corporate sponsors, the Durham Literacy Center could not have raised $20,000. It is a truly awesome event where nonprofits only have to focus on raising money. We bring together our board, staff, volunteers, students and supporters to build a common bond. It is hard to place a value on that."

Local volunteer groups that helped managed the event included TROSA, NCCU Community Service Learning students, Junior Leadership Durham, AICPA, Octagon Community Service Club at Durham School of the Arts, Volunteer Center of Durham's Student Action Board, The Company Dancers of Nina's School of Dance, Durham Divas and Northern High School Step team.

"The Volunteer Center of Durham may host the event but it is our sponsors who provide the support we need to create the event," says Dorfman.

Sponsors included the City of Durham, Durham Parks and Recreation Department, Durham Bulls, AICPA, Eurosport, Interactive Playgrounds, Measurement Incorporated, Northgate Mall, Omega Sports, Parker & Otis, The Herald Sun, Triangle United Way, Big Frog, ChallengeWave, Yelp, Triangle Chiropractic & Neurology Center and NAS Solutions.

The Volunteer Center of Durham is a nonprofit organization that enriches the Durham community and the lives of its residents through volunteerism. For information, or to volunteer, visit www.thevolunteercenter.org.
