One step at a time, hikers eat up the miles. And one section at a time, new hiking trails take shape. North Carolina's ambitious Mountains-to-Sea trail is being built that way, and the trail builders recently got a welcome boost.

A land purchase by the state parks system will extend the trail to Johnston County. The site is where Marks Creek joins the Neuse River near the Wake County line. Two miles of trail will be built there, a portion of a 60-mile-long Mountains-to-Sea section from Falls Lake to Johnston County. Help with the purchase came from the Trust for Public Lands and the Triangle Land Conservancy. The Eno River Association put up the purchase money for a separate trail-related transaction in Durham County.
