WakeUP Wake County

WakeUP Wake County is a non-partisan, citizens’ group supporting well-planned, sustainable growth in Wake County. Wake County is growing rapidly, with a population due to double in 20 years and 35 acres of land developed each day. WakeUP, a non-profit organization incorporated in North Carolina, was formed in 2006 by a group of concerned, civic-minded citizens who believe that growth is good, as long as it is planned to ensure a better future for our communities.

The mission of WakeUP Wake County is to educate the public and government officials about growth issues and long-term solutions for quality development planning to ensure the best quality of life for all citizens for decades to come. WakeUP advocates on behalf of our members, proposes quality growth solutions, and monitors actions of municipal governments, the Wake County Commissioners, and the state legislature, as they pertain to sustainability.

WakeUP believes that good growth should pay for itself. Is new development truly paying its fair share, or are taxpayers footing the bill for poorly planned sprawl? WakeUP believes that those who financially benefit from growth should help pay their fair share of the costs of needed infrastructure, such as schools and water supply. The real estate and developer political lobbies have long influenced decisions of local elected officials. It is time for citizens to be heard and for growth to help pay through new funding options, including higher impact fees and a real estate transfer all.
