The Next Frontier in Campus Ministry
August 11, 2009
By: by Jan Rivero
Everywhere I go these days in
campus ministry circles the conversation is
about faith diversity. How are we engaging
students in interfaith dialogue, in multi-faith
experiences? How are we equipping
students to live in a new world order where
faith is on the front burner: talked about,
learned, expressed publicly in nonproselytizing
ways? If anything good could
come out of the horror of September 11,
perhaps it will be that the major religions of
the world will realize how critical it is that for
us to build bridges to one another across faith
lines. The tragedy of the Twin Towers has
made public the destructive power of zealotry
in any religion; and it has raised the stakes
for the rest of us who are moderate,
measured and reasonable in our faith to be
vocal about who we are. The opportunity
confronting campus ministry now is how to
enable student to be comfortable in their faith
so that they can entertain those of other
faiths, learn of them and from them, so that
all people of faith can live in safety and
respect. The bottom line is this: we have the
opportunity to shape a generation of young
people who will commit themselves to putting
religion at the heart of the world’s great
lasting peace. I dare to believe it can and
must be done, and that the God of all
creation will help us to do it!
