Spring 2010 Education Grants

The students of the undergraduate class "Philanthropy as a Tool for Social Change" would like to inform you about our recent educational grant opportunity. Our mission is to build and sustain strong communities by creating educational opportunities for those who are limited due to lack of economic and supportive resources. Our grants support local efforts to protect,expand and create programs that increase education access throughout North Carolina.

GlaxoSmithKline's 2nd Annual IMPACT Awards
- Are you a 501(c)(3) nonprofit providing access to health-care and setting an outstanding example?
- Would you like to receive an award of $40,000 for your current, overall work?
- Would you like the media to tell the story of your work in the community?
- Do you want the opportunity to share best practices with other organizations that provide access to healthcare?
The GlaxoSmithKline IMPACT Awards target community-based healthcare nonprofits in the Research Triangle Park region that provide access to healthcare for the underserved. Up to ten organizations in Chatham, Durham, Fraklin, Harnett, Johnston, Orange, Person or Wake Counties will be awarded $40,000 each.
Eligibility and Criteria:
- Have an IRS letter of determination verifying 501(c)(3) status as an independent entity (not part of a larger organization such as a university or hospital). This means the organization must be a separate nonprofit entity as designated by their IRS letter of determination. The name of the organization applying must have been on the IRS 501(c)(3) letter of determination for a minimum of five years.
- Have an annual total operating expenses between $160,000 and $3 million, as documented in its most recent fiscal year financial statement.
- Be located in Chatham, Durham, Franklin, Harnett, Johnston, Orange, Person, or Wake Counties
- Have access to healthcare as its primary focus and mission (not human services), e.g., medical, dental, and mental healthcare are eligible services. Food, shelter, clothing, and transportation are human services and as such organization providing access to human services as their primary mission are not eligible.
- Not have been a previous GlaxoSmithKline IMPACT Award Winner.

Information on Federal Stimulus Funds for Nonprofits
- Labor Department stimulus funding for nonprofits providing job training in healthcare or other high-growth industries. Application deadline: October 5, 2009.
- The state budget, signed into law on August 7, 2009, holds a couple of competitive grant opportunities for nonprofits engaged in dropout prevention and community health. Applications for both will become available in September. Check back for updates.
